Emergency Weather Response Services

EFry’s Emergency Weather Response Services provide temporary overnight shelter and essential support for women and children experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity during periods of extreme weather. When a community weather alert is activated, the service offers a safe, warm, and welcoming place for people who may otherwise be exposed to dangerous outdoor conditions.

Emergency Weather Response Services operate seasonally through EFry’s Maida Duncan Women’s Drop-in Centre in New Westminster. The service is designed to be accessible and responsive to people facing diverse circumstances, including poverty, housing instability, gender-based violence, health concerns, and other barriers that may make it difficult to access safe shelter.

While accessing the service, guests may receive a safe place to rest, nutritious food and refreshments, clothing, hygiene products, showers, laundry facilities, and access to other basic necessities. EFry staff provide respectful, non-judgmental support and can help connect guests with housing services, income assistance, health care, community programs, and other resources based on their individual needs and priorities.

The goal of Emergency Weather Response Services is to reduce the immediate health and safety risks associated with extreme weather while helping guests feel welcomed, respected, and connected to support. Through trauma-informed, gender-responsive, culturally safe, and person-centred service, EFry recognizes that emergency shelter is not only about protection from the weather – it is also an opportunity to offer dignity, care, and a pathway toward greater safety and stability.
