Our Volunteers
Volunteers are a vital part of the EFry family. Over 85 years ago, a small group of volunteers determined to make a difference founded EFry after noticing the poor treatment of women in the justice system.
Today, volunteers remain at the heart of all we do, supporting our programs in prisons, at our facilities, and in the community.

Explore Our Volunteer Run Programs
Future Bright Program (Various locations)
Future Bright is a EFry program that helps families access free funding for their children’s post-secondary education. EFry is looking for volunteers to assist with Future Bright’s Super Clinic events. At these events, Future Bright Registration Facilitators, financial institutions, Service Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency will be on site to support families in registering for the Canada Learning Bond and BC Training and Education Savings Grant. Maida Duncan
Located in New Westminster, EFry’s coordinator of volunteers to screen, interview, and train volunteers to work in the Maida Duncan Drop-In centre. The drop-in volunteers are augmented with support staff. Together, staff and volunteers manage the centres offerings of small meals/snacks, a free clothing and household goods bank, hot showers and laundry machines, wifi, computers, phone, and referral to community resources. All services are free.
Storybook Program
EFry’s Storybook program brings parents and children together through the power of reading. EFry supplies new, age-appropriate books and records inmate parents reading them aloud. A CD player and the recordings are then sent to their children, giving them an opportunity to share a story together. The Storybook program is one of EFry’s most successful prison programs. It is available at Alouette Correctional Centre for Women, Fraser Valley Institution and Surrey Pretrial Centre.
Downtown Community Court
We need volunteers to be courtroom attendants/runners while trials are going on. They assist clients who are going through the court, as well as the judge, prosecutor and defense.
Burnaby Youth Custody
Visit with our young men and women who are currently serving time in custody. Volunteers lead a variety of activities, as well as tutor and mentor the youth. It is recommended that volunteers have their own transportation.
Event Volunteers
Make a difference in your community by volunteering at EFry events. From welcoming guests to supporting event activities and community engagement, our volunteers help create meaningful experiences while advancing EFry’s mission. Whether you can lend a few hours or support throughout an event, we’d love to have you on our team and make a positive impact together. Fill out this form to receive further information.
Practicums
EFry offers practicums of up to 450 hours to students from recognized colleges and universities. We are able to provide supported practicums suited to students pursuing the courses of study such as:
- Child and youth care
- Bachelor in social work
- Community support worker
- Women’s studies
- Criminology
